I think flirting is obvious if he compliments you often, keeps eye contact with you, smiles, can't seem to keep his hands off you, but doesn't grope, also if he is coy or playful, that's another sign of flirting.

While the answers previously listed are good indications, they tend to be used by very forward individuals. What is often overlooked however, is that even the less bold males, myself falling in that group, have slightly more subtle ways of flirting.
Tip Number 1: THE EYES. There will be something in the way they look at you, or, if they are really shy, in the way their eyes turn away from you when you look at them. There is no easy way to describe the look (or nonlook), but it is recognizable.
Tip Number 2: TEASING. This one requires caution, as often a guy is simply playing around with you without actually flirting. However, if the other signs listed in these answers match up, teasing can be seen as a sort of confirmation.

He remembers little things you mention in casual conversation.
It may take you by surprise. You might have been talking when he was around and two weeks later he'll say, "Well, you like orange fizz..."
Sometimes he stares straight into your eyes, & holds the gaze.
His eyes get 'soft' when he looks at you. They change slightly or get relaxed around the edges. It's subtle, but you can tell if you watch...
