Harley Davidson has already gone under due to japanese motorcycles in the past, but that was when if you rode a Harley you were considered an outlaw, a menace to society, and the majority of people buying motorcycles new were rich, classy people, even though motorcycles were very cheap.
However now a days, I think though Harley Davidson will last forever, a japanese motorcycle will still be found more and last longer. But still a Harley Davidson is the best motorcycle, even though I only own an older model Honda.
At the same time though, some bikers have actually lost some respect for Harley because the president of the company wrote a letter to every dealership stating that he wanted them to convince every rider and buyer to purchase the Screaming Eagle package, or atleast the exhaust system, due to the fact they were more friendly to the ears and eyes.
The president even stated that the salesmen should convince them by saying that it would improve the ride and life of the bike. Even though that is not true, or even gone under research. They were trying again to make Harley an "everybody" motorcycle, and make more money at the same time.

Well that is a tough question. Technology today has made the field very competitive. Yes Harley is built in the USA but so is Honda. I have seen more Harley's on side of the road than any other bike out there. Now I will admit, many were older models.
Harley's and Honda's alike even the other Jap bikes are on a fairly even field. I have seen two types of bikers. Those that buy for resale value....and others for longevity. I'm one that does not believe in buying a bike to have a name on a bike and pay extra for the name. I have a Honda that cost 10k less than a Harley. And it does just as good a job if not better. For the same class of bike.
I'm not trying to trash Harley. They have had a tough time in the past and seem to be better managed now. They put out a good bike. But I would not say a better bike. Like I said. the field is fairly even now. And everyone is fighting to get on top.
Just find a bike that is good for you. One that wont break you wallet and one that fits you well. Then once you find the right bike for you.....Just Ride....

The main reason Harleys will out-last other makes is the ease of maintaining them, when you need a part it doesn't have to be one particular part #.
You can inter-change parts from one year and model to another. I have a 1981 FLH with an air intake off a '93 Softail, a sprung solo seat off a '64 Police Special, saddlebags that I bought at different swap meets ( 4 pieces bought at 4 meets ) all on a modified stretched and raked frame.
I also have a friend who has a Pan-shovel ( panhead bottom-end with a shovel top end ) on a late-model soft-tail frame.
Try doing that with your Honda " Old-wing "

The main reason that Harley engines already out last the jap scrap is very simple. The Jap iron revs 8000- 12,000rpm, while HD revs up to 6000-7000rpm. It's called metal fatigue. The HD loafs along @ 3000 rpm @ 65mph all day forever , while the Jap iron hums along @ 8000rpm or so. Over the course of time, the metal that's constantly revving higher will run hotter, build more friction, wear more due to excess heat & vibration & cause metal failure due to molecular changes in the metal due to excess stress. My '55 Pan loafs along @ 65 all day & has done so for 51 years. Not too many Jap scoots in that class.

Harleys are slowly becoming Jap bikes. Just like every other American company, Harley has been getting OEM parts through Japanese manufacturers.
This is also the reason that they're becoming more reliable. Higher quality parts for less money than an American worker will be paid to do the same work.

If you look close at all Japanese motorcycles, they are clones of Harley Davidsons. All the Touring bikes and cruisers models.
Harley still is the only American made motorcycle which is traded on the US Stock Exchange.

If i rode a Harley the way i ride my 2002 cbr it would last all of five minutes, I've rung my bikes neck for 18 months and 12000 miles now and never done anything other than regular servicing. Not a single fault, always started first time. Harley's can't do that and can't compete with jap build quality. owning a jap bike isn't like owning a Harley tho'

it relatively is truthfully fantastic, no longer necessarliy a valid company type, yet fantastic for a bike enterprise to make only motorcycles. the subject is, NONE, and that i will repeat for the sluggish, not one of the main substantial bike manufactureres make in basic terms motorcycles. the only human beings left who do that are custom builders, and an substantial element to them a minimum of have a clothing line. look at harleys 10k report. They make virtually all of thier earnings from upload-ons, clothing, and repair, no longer motorcycles. For the checklist, Honda made motorcycles until eventually now it made something with an engine. It got here upon it grow to be good at making vehicles, so it diverse! i'm happy harley have been given some help from porsche by way of fact the revolution motor is a very good motor. If in basic terms they might placed that motor on different motorcycles and do away with the ninety six, which, for my section is a rubbish motor. there isn't any valid reason for a ninety six cubic inch motor to be putting out a million/2 the capability of a 1130cc engine. era. Harley purists dont like the vrod by way of fact it relatively is liquid cooled. you need to submit to in techniques it incredibly is the harley dedicated that are conserving the enterprise lower back from progression, no longer the enterprise itself. the enterprise will do what it has to to survive, hence why it expenses a fortune for the broker to repair your motorbike, and a t blouse that expenses $4 to offer expenses $35 to purchase. lots of the individuals who dont like harleys like the vrod by way of fact it incredibly is the only motorbike the MC makes that may compete with the different make of bike, and not in basic terms place self assurance in the dedicated to purchase. in the event that they placed the engine of the vrod in a history physique, I in all likelihood might have not at all offered my Victory, yet my kingpin has the comparable capability, greater effectual reliability, and greater convenience. no longer undesirable from a bike enterprise owned via a 2nd fee snowmobile enterprise. Atleast it doesnt have bowling pins for spokes.

Actually, if you take into account the time that a Harley spends in the shop due to repairs, Japanese motorcycles last longer.
