Yeah they can draft all they want, if they start inside the United States Correctional Facilities. Why send countless husbands, fathers, and brothers off to fight and die when there's loads of prisoners who live to fight and kill. I did a paper on this when I was in high school. What makes them better than the innocent men and women who leave families behind? Nothing. In fact they should be the first ones to go. Regular armed forces will still be able to serve if they want but if you're going to force people by law then start with those who have no respect for the law. The Penal Forces of the Unites States. Betcha Osama and the rest of them would think twice before starting some sh_t if they saw Tiny and Pookie and them getting off the damn ship! I'd bet money on that.

In a national emergency, yes. I myself am a former draftee having served in the U.S.Army during the Vietnam war and though I wasn't thrilled at being drafted initially, I would like to think I'm a better person for my experiences. I did a lot of growing up while in the service. Serving your country should be an honor, not something to shy away from. So Yes, if there is a genuine need for more people in the military, then it is right.

I just went to the site you mentioned.
The military can not draft anyone without the congress being in agreement. Did you see the vote against the draft the last time it was brought up? The numbers against the draft were staggering!
My father was in the Navy in WW2. His plane was hit by a kamakzie and he died 12 years later from shrapnel that worked through the aorta. I lost a brother in the canals in vietnam. Also Navy. My oldest son was on a ageis ( Navy ) when China had some of our airmen and women and our plane. And the Persian gulf was and is a hotbed.
My husband is army ( retired ) he spent time in Bosnia, Kosovo, and lead the tanks in Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He had to clear some bunkers at great peril in disembarking and entering. He encountered the enemy there within. He , my father and my brother received commendations and medals for bravery.
So to answer your question. I think our government , all branches who make these decisions have the " right, " to make these decisions because we elect them to make our democratic choices in order to protect our freedoms and right to choose. The majority is the rule. If our society as a whole does not want the draft back, it will not be back.
Our military has learned that it does better with volunteers.
They found people who enlist without duress are better at doing their jobs.
I would not like to see my family drafted. Nor would I ever want to bury one of my enlisted children. Nor do I like worrying about their safety and I miss the time that I have not been able to spend with them. But there are things here at home that my friend's children have been lost to.
Such as being victims of crime and social disorders like meth and doing time for meth and DWIs. People make choices and when we vote we make a choice to have those people make our choices. I don't think you need to be overly concerned about the re-emergence of the draft.

Er, read the article... it's a lot of speculation.

"A congressional resolution introduced last fall by Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), a Korean War veteran, called for the draft _ which was abolished in 1973 _ to be reinstituted.

While that resolution was largely seen as a ploy to embarrass President Bush in an election year, Chatfield believes the 402-2 vote against it reflects the true congressional opposition to the issue."

Looks like Congress made a choice already on where it stands.

Because there was a time when the "young men" would step up to the plate because they love this country and would fight to the death for freedom. There are still some that will, but not nearly as many as there were.

That being said, it won't happen unless there is an emergency. And yes it's right because a country that will let anyone slam the government in public just because they want to say what's on their mind deserves and needs to be preserved.

Yes and no.

I think that a person should have the right to decide what to do with their life. If their forte isn't on a battlefield, then they shouldn't have to go to one. You want people fighting for us that want to be there, not people forced to be there.

But, I also think that it is the price for being an American.

The only fair draft would be one where rich people couldn't get a doctor's note and get out of it.

I think if the military has to draft anyone they should start with the jail birds. Unfortunetly. I lot of young men want to join the military because they want to die. Life is so bad right now. Not many people want to live anymore.
Think about that the next time you decide Your not going to bother to vote because it doesn't matter.

I believe it depends on the circumstances, and the justification of the conflict which the military would be compelling young men to participate in for the service of their country. In World War II, the reason for waging war was clear: We were being attacked by hostile foreign powers clearly bent on world domination. There was no question in anyone's mind we were fighting a war for our survival and that of the free world.

Now in our day, the reasons for waging wars like the one in Iraq are questionable at best, being that we initiated the military aggression for reasons that vacillate from alleged weapons of mass destruction to the 'fight for democracy'.

Unfortunately the way things are going with our foreign policy as a nation, and with the U.S. as the target of lack of foreign policy creditbility, and hate, the day may come when we are the victims of an all out attack because of all this, leaving us with no choice but to defend ourselves as we did in World War II. I hope that doesn't happen.

It's not going to happen becuase the people who are on 8 yr contracts and go into the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) are getting called back into service... Do your homework it says might not will... I think for people to get a better idea on how the military works especially in the Afghanistan or Iraq they should come out here...
