I believe the Russian movie War and Peace was like 18 hours long in its original form. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Film stock by Czech director Buracz Bosnitz in 1968 consisted of 908 hours of blank film. Not surprisingly, it was only shown once and then used to film movies.
The longest UK film was a 1970s British underground movie called 'The Longest Most meaningless Movie in the World' which lasted for 48 hours.
One of the longest commercially made talking films was Lawrence of Arabia which was made in 1962 by English director David McLean and starred Peter O'Toole. It runs for three hours 42 minutes - two minutes longer than Gone With The Wind.
"Cure for Insomnia" is best described as an experimental film (i.e., pretentious and without a point). Of all the films with actual storylines, the 1928 Chinese movie "The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple" is the longest, clocking in at 27 hours. As for the longest documentary, "Grandmother Martha" wins with a 24-hour running time.

"The Cure for Insomnia" has been dubbed the longest movie ever with a running time of 85 hours.
It premiered in its entirety at The School Of The Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois from 31 January to 3 February 1987 in one continuous showing.
It's basically an experiment designed to reprogram biological clocks for insomniacs so they can sleep again. L.D. Groban reads his own poem during the span of about four days, which is interspliced with stock footage of heavy-metal videos and x-rated footage.

I don't know. But I know in 3rd grade we had to watch a movie on the Civil War called The Blue and The Gray. And that one I think was like 12 hours long. I actually have no recollection of the exact length of time because it took us days to watch.

if there are no restrictions, one of, if not the, longest is a film by Andy Warhol which was only a camera focussed on a building for 8-12 hours; he did another long film on a guy sleeping

For me it's Gone with the wind for US, Seven Samurai for Japan, and War and Peace, some Russian flick that I didn't bother to finish (6 hours, whew!).
