I'm moving to Canada soon from England and I'll be studying Psychology at the University of Winnipeg but the only person I know in Winnipeg is my boyfriend and I kinda want to know some easy ways of getting to know people...possibly clubs at the uni?

Any help would of course be much appreciated.

there's really no easy way about it, as one of the comments says that people are a bit reserved here, even though slogan in Friendly Manitoba. I think it's a very shallow friendliness on a surface ;)

If I were you I would consider going to some Dance lessons with your b/f. I found it's one of the best ways to meet people here so far. There must be some stuff going on at university, maybe some volunteering you can do, and so on.

Winter is a slow time around here as far as entertainment, unless you are really into hardcore outdoors stuff when it's -40C, and there's really nothing to do other than to go to restaurants and clubs :)

Good luck! and welcome

I have experience moving to Winnipeg from another place and I found them to be very insular and slow to warm to strangers. You may have a better group to choose from at the U of W (I took a summer semester there many many many years ago and it was ok but I don't remember anybody I met there). I married a man from Winnipeg and was never accepted by his family or his friends. The majority of Winnipegers NEVER move out of the neighbourhood they grew up in and have little understanding of the world around them unless they are university educated (small percentage). Perhaps you can explore that phenomenon in your Psychology thesis. One thing you have going for you is the novelty of your accent. I know this sounds closed minded re: Winnipeggers but you will understand soon enough - Not all 'peggers are this way and it is still where my mom was born.

depending on what kinds of things you are into; going out to the bars/clubs, finding a social activity that interests you, join a fitness club or something. Also there are websites where people post their interests and stuff, and you can respond if you're interested.
