I have to do that soon and I am too much of a lover of animal life to do that

I'm going to have to dissect a fetal pig in school soon. I was wondering how i'm going to get through it since i am a big animal lover too. But then I just thought, it's going to already be dead, & it's not like I'm gonna be hurting it. So don't worry it'll be ok, just don't think too much about it.

You have to do a LIVE dissection? That is inhumane. Many schools have other options now if a student doesn't want to dissect an animal (even Vet schools, believe it or not!) Talk with your teacher about this and ask for a alternative project.

Some places use animals that have been put down by the humane society etc for dissection/education. Would you feel better about that?

It was more years than I want to admit that I was in High school but at the time I simply refused. I was a pretty good student and I just said "really what life skills am I gaining by cutting open a frog and look at it." (BTW it still has not been needed this far in life)
My mother backed me up so while everyone was playing with frog innards I watched a video where they did it. My thought was hmmm seems that everyone could have watched the same video. Not to mention w/school budgets dead frogs are not cheap.
I would first ask your instructor if there is another option for you to get the grade. It NEVER hurts to ask.

live dissections are known as vivisections. i've done a couple on frogs to test their lung functions and it kindof sucks. try to understand that the techniques in you lab prodedure are there to dissect animals in the most humane way possible while still learning the biology. i know it sucks performing the vivisections, but the animal doesn't feel the kind of pain that you get when you see the incision.

I guess you wouldn't take your dog to the vet though seeing that they dissect animals so that they can learn how to cure them. The animal you will dissect will be brain dead and won't feel anything. If we didn't dissect animals we could never mend humans.

I love love love love dissections. Anatomy was my favorite class in college. When I was in the class, I dissected a dog, we named him Shorty. To study the muscles in his shoulder, I got to pull his front leg off.

It rocked.

Besides, you won't be dissecting a live animal. It will be dead. Just breathe through your mouth. And wear gloves.

i have seen it on t.v. probably the first thing you have to dissect is a frog. it is very sad, but you have to get the grade. even if you love animals. you don't want to fail the class. good luck!

I'm a medical student & i plan 2 be a surgeon so i must do that on living Human beings not only animals.
