lent is the time before easter when Christians celebrate and remember our Lord Jesus Christ for the sacrifice He made (dying for our sins) for all mankind. Because He fasted for 40 days/ nights before His ressurrection, we as Christians celebrate by "fasting" or giving up somethig in our lives that means a lot to us. Unfortunately, we have been reduced to giving up chocolate and soda pop rather than giving up something of greater significance. Some people also choose to give of themselves by volunteering in places like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc.

Lent is a certain period of Holy days (40) when Christians- mostly Catholics- fast and give up something they like, but is not really necessary. Ex: television, coffee, etc.
