No but I was in D.C.

It was awful, no one could get through on their cellphones so no one knew if our family and friends were ok. No one could get a cab to get home, the metro was packed and the busses were swamped.

My coworkers and I watched it on the news because there was no way to get home once the plane hit the pentagon.

I watched it live on TV, and drove through NY on the day afterward, and then spent the next several months in northern New Jersey, and could see where the towers used to be from there.

I remember one incident, shortly after I got there. I was at the gym, and had just come out of the shower. I have very long hair back then, and had a towel wrapped around my hair (like I always did after a shower).

Two big guys came up behind me and one of them said that "you d*mn towel-heads better get out of our country". The other commented that I might not make it as far as my car. But both were very shocked when I turned around and they saw I wasn't arabic. They kind of mumbled something and turned and walked away.

That was the first time I'd ever experienced that kind of race-based hatred directed at me personally. And the thought that it's still just as prevalent today continues to give me pause.

We've obviously not learning the lessons that the world is presenting to us. Every time we give in to that fear and that hatred of others, hatred based purely because someone has a different skin color or a different religion, we lose centuries of progress.

And we become exactly what we despise -- a people that use fear and hatred and violence to destroy what we don't like.

Is that really the legacy we want to pass on to our children?

I was at a beach on Long Island, field trip, some small body of water away from the city, I could see smoke, but the buildings were out of sight.
