Rap began with Hip Hop. Hip Hop is an artform. Today we have people calling themselves artists but there is nothing artistic about what they do. Simply put their lyrics are WHACK. If not for a tight beat or catchy hook they would get no rotation. Record executives put people on because they fit a formula. We as music consumers need to demand that the artists we love and support keep coming with the tight beats but lace them with lyrical content that says something. All this talking loud and saying nothing has given me a head ache.

I agree. The mainstream media has been oversaturated by a lot of cookie-cutter emcees (if we can even call them emcees) and candy rappers who spout nonsense because right now, they're the ones bringing their record companies the most money. Some, like me, might be old enough to remember this and some might not be, but back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's there was a lot of variety and substance to rap. You could turn on the radio and hear conscious (as in socially/politically conscious), gangsta, old-school, jazz-infused, comical and storytelling styles of rap back to back in one sitting (or one car trip). THAT is what's sorely lacking in mainstream rap right now - variety and substance. There's nothing to choose from anymore, kinda like going to McDonald's and seeing nothing but fries on the overhead menu.

There are still some good emcees out there who don't fit the "cookie-cutter" mold and have something to say, but unfortunately we rarely (if ever) see them in the mainstream media. A lot of the real emcees have been put on the backburner or are stuck in the underground circuit because for the most part, good ol' Corporate America has flooded the market with greedy rappers with a gangsta/baller fantasy because that's what's "hot" right now. It's all about whatever makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance.

It would be cool if some of the old-school artists would come out of retirement in force like the Superfriends or the Justice League and take back hip hop - lol. But I know it'll never happen. :( For now, we just have to wait for the virtual pendulum to swing in the other direction.

I never liked any of it. Very few of them. I don't know what ur saying. Um never? I don't believe the formula thing. Well kinda but it's all genre's and all music, there is a basic, there are rules to it.

I completely agree. Back in the day, artists had something important to say. Songs were meaningful. It's all about hype now.

man, who cares. As long as good to dance and move to, I mean thats what people buy music mostly now for, to dance and bounce to it. if you lookin' for so much meaning go visit a philosopher or something. Or u can listen to old Tupac songs or Immortal Technique.
