I don't know, but I think Chris Walken brought it to mainstream with his "The only answer: more cowbell" shtick on SNL.

It's true. Not just the song parodied for it on SNL (KidRock is right on with that one), but also Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" - cowbell MAKES that song.

The Beastie Boys had it figured out, didn't they. Paul's Boutique didn't have many redeeming qualities, but they sure knew how to ring that funky bell. I also like a good old fashioned whistle (like a referee uses) in a song.
