Most motherboards come in a common form factor such as ATX, MICRO-ATX, and BABY AT. When searching for a new case check to see what type of motherboards it is compatible with.

check the dimensions of both the inside of the case and the motherboard itself in the item descriptions. It usually isn't a problem as cases are usually made, with the exception of mini cases, universally, with several standoffs available for securing the motherboard. But, it never hurts to make sure.

The motherboard wil have a "FORM FACTOR" and the case should have a list of "FORM FACTOR" motherboards it will support.

Your case will have a designation(I.E. ATX or Micro-ATX)..
The mother-board will have a matching designation..
I.E.. if your case is ATX, then you'd buy a mother-board with the designation of ATX..
Your case should say somewhere on it, what it is...The mother-board will say right on the box...
