Nick Drake had nothing to do with the song.
The music was written by Johnny Mandel, the words were written by Mike Altman. the the son of the director, Robert Altman. Mike was only 14 at the time and ended up making more on the royalties to the song than his dad made for directing the movie.

It's the theme song for M*A*S*H, but "Suicide is Painless" was performed in the movie by Loudon Wainwright, III (Music by Johnny Mandel

Yes if you listen to the entire song (past the opening credits of MASH) you will know why it is named that. Great song.
