Favorites are hard to pick but here goes:
Romance: A Walk in the Clouds (Keanu Reeves)
Comedy:Leap of Faith (Steve Martin/Lolita Davidovitch)
Adventure: Raiders of the Lost Arc (Harrison Ford)
Family: Miracle on 34th Street (the original with Edmund Gwenn as Santa)
Drama: Man without a Face (Mel Gibson)
Animated: Shrek
That should do for now

Well, one of my favorites is a new one I just saw the other night. It's an independent film called "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio". It's really good. It's set in the 1950's and it's about a homemaker who enters contests and it's actually really good. It's based on a true story.

Vertigo (1958). It's an incredible artistic masterpiece, richly textured and arranged with remarkable precision, and it is Alfred Hitchcock's most profound and personal work. It is a tale of love, death, guilt and obsession, and it features highly inventive and creative camera angles, surreal and dream-like cinematography, vibrant San Francisco scenery, a hauntingly-beautiful and unconventional musical score from the legendary composer Bernard Herrmann, and a frightening, career-best performance from the terrific actor James Stewart.

A dutch film called Spoorloos (The Vanishing in English). This is a Dutch suspense film and I guarantee that you will think about it for days after you see it. You will be totally creeped out.
Avoid the US remake which starred Keifer Sutherland. The Dutch version was made for thinking persons. The US version is a shoot-em-up made for children.
