The Battle for the Ireland Trophy could be a great rivalry, but Notre Dame and BC ended their annual series. The rivalry only lasted ten years where the series record was a split 5-5. Other rivalries such as the Iron Bowl (Auburn vs. Alabama) has lasted for 70 years. Such a strong rivalry exists in Alabama because both schools fight for recruits and their fan base is spread throughout all of Alabama. BC mainly recruits out of Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey, and New York, and Notre Dame only has 12 players on this years roster that played in those states, so BC and the Irish have separate recruiting bases. Boston College vs. Notre Dame is not the top rivalry game.

Absolutely not. But for all of those who said ND-Penn St., that's also erroneous. ND-BC does not have nearly the history that many other rivalries do. Not to mention the fact that it was temporarily discontinued, which suggests that it's not that important. ND's biggest rivals are probably USC and Michigan. Overall, Michigan-Ohio St. is the top rivalry game. This is state-on-state hatred, and both teams are always in the national championship picture.
