I have an old Gateway 2000 solo Pentium 133. I'm trying to get working. usually when I turn it on, all the display shows is static, or just all white with a black streak. Is there any hope for this? Trash it?

Sounds like a hardware problem. With a laptop you best off taking it a repair shop or having Gateway look at it. If it's really old I would just chuck it if you don't care about anything saved on it.

Could be many, many things,

1st, Are you using the battery of the AC adapter? Try both to see if you see any difference.

2: I'd try connecting a regular monitor to the laptop and see if it displays the same as the laptop's Screen.

3rd: I'd try removing the hard drive and reinserting it. Could be simply bad contacts. Also, you could try connecting the laptop's hard drive to a desktop and see if you can access the files. That would tell you if the drive itself is good.

4th: Perhaps the BIOS chip is loose or needs updating.

Probably has some use for one of the "PC Toys" in the book about them, that uses older laptops in many projects.

My best choice is to run it in the "Linux Toys" projects, as they run 50X faster than the Microsoft versions, and they are virus proof.
I'm thinking the Digital Receptionist to receive voicemail in e-mail.
