there are only three mistakes:
Not living your life in fear of things.
Having no fear, and
not knowing what to fear.

We have been brought up in life to fear failure, and we sure get punished for failure in the case of business ending up in jail is not the best way to spend some or the rest of your life. Other failure may lead to health issues or death.
There is also the growing fear of cancer, STD's, bankruptcy, divorce, unemployment, crime and terrorism in almost everything we do and this has certainly gotten a lot worse over the years. I think these problems keep many people happy to just enjoy a normal life avoiding risk, and their success or happiness is measured on not being involved in any of these situations/problems.
We are brought up in school, university and the community to want and aim to get to the top position at work, and to achieve this in the shortest amount of time possible, but usually a management position results in stress that long term leads to mental problems. The risk taking descisions to get to the top position may lead to job loss, so many people will avoid risk taking and just be good employees. The end result is that people become happy to work a normal job for average pay.
In the case of trading financial markets, the statistic of 90% of people failing to be profitable traders speaks for itself, as does the statistic of 80% of company startups failing in the first two years. From my experience these statistics are about right. Early failure or too many failures cause people to eventially give up.
Risk taking for most people will result in a worse situation, and most people i have come to know are not risk takers.

often people prefer the safe aproach to things. As children were brought into my life I stopped taking such big risks. To think that my risk could damage my child, how selfish of me, I go to the edge whem warrented, but never at the risk of my kids.

The easy answer is people are afraid to die, but I believe people don't have enough confidence in their own ability to survive anything other than the "norm". Most people lead sheltered, safe, uneventful lives and are simply mentally and physically unprepared for any kind of challenge.

everybody likes risk. it's like a rush you can't get from anything else naturally. some people are comfortable and don't want to disrupt everything, so they take tiny risks instead of big ones. but it still gets them off.
