Today I went to have an oil and filter change for my 1997 Mazda 626. It is a great little second car with mileage of 83,678. The body is in excellent condition, and it runs very well.

While doing the oil job, with my car up on the lift, my mechanic showed me that the "spring" behind the front wheel base on the driver's side was broken and as a result the car was a bit off center.
He said this was probably caused by hitting to many potholes over the years and I have certainly hit my share living in the Northeast. He also mentioned taht if I don't replace this spring it could possibly puncture the tire while I am driving and who knows what could happen. Obviously, he will have to replace the spring on the other side as well too keep the front balanced.
The price is reasonable, but has anyone ever heard of this?

If the spring on the right side isn't damaged why fix it. The shift between a new strut and spring will not be noticeable, broken springs can create other problems if not repaired. It will not cause a "balance" shift if you only replace the side that is broken, however, it is good preventive maintainance. Good luck !

Yes, you might as well have the front struts replaced since he's pulling the orignals off to replace the springs. Kind of a PM sort of thing. Would be a good deal in the long run.

I have heard that if you hold a feather over your head and scream like a chicken water will fall from the sky when it rains.

That's just what I heard.

Cars, trucks, all things wear out, they are built that way. its just a matter of time. On your car, no never heard of that one, but heck I am only 98 years old, I still have a lot to learn.

PS Great question, and well put together. Good Job. that's two today!

a broken coil spring is a common repair that needs to be made..normally the driver should notice a pull to one side or the other..a popping or crunching sound..

sometimes it happens because the upper strut mount plate gets stiff and there is alot of pressure put on the coils while turning ...
