So the father can bond with his son. He will have more of an inkling of what the son is feeling or going through because he was once a boy. So maybe they feel they can help their son more than they can help their daughter.

For better or for worse, we are a patriarchal society and men
are taught that boys care on the family bloodline.
That really is pretty meaningless nowadays - the only
thing that gives it any validity at all is that most marriages
inherit the father's last name - therefore, a son, if he has
children, is somewhat more likely to pass on the name.
Of course, in reality, its a crapshoot which genes get passed
on. Gender is only one aspect of many.
If, during the meiosis that created the guy's sperm, the only
chromosome that gets passed on from his father is the Y
chromosome (the smallest, containing the least information),
that means that the rest of the information came from the
guy's mother.
I suppose from HIS point of view, his genes are getting passed
on so who cares, but his father might consider that the
bloodline isn't passed on.
The closer you look, the sillier it gets.

Many fathers want a son so that when the boy is older, the two of them could do "guy" things together like rough sports and the like. Also, fathers like to think they can turn their son into a "chip off the old block" (a carbon copy of himself). After the baby is born, let him spend as much time as possible with his new daughter, and they'll be best friends in no time!

I think fathers inherently want to carry on the family line unto the next generation. We had a boy first and then a girl. I agree that boys tend to protect their sisters, too. My husband, on the other hand, bonded with our daughter better than he did our son. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that he was younger when we had our son and he wasn't ready to be a parent yet. By the time we had our daughter, almost six years apart and one miscarriage in between, he had matured and was ready to play the role of a father.

I had the same problem. My boyfriend wanted a boy so badly but we wound up having a girl. I don't really know why guys think like that, but I do know that it will change, like you said. My daughter's almost 2 months old now and he adores her.

All guys feel this way. They want a mini me to carry on their name and also a big brother to look after the sister and do a little of his job. Don't worry because that little girl is going to win his heart and have him wrapped around her finger.

He wants to teach his boy to play sports, and he sees himself doing manly things with his son. Man can't seem imagine doing such things with a girl. My dad had three girls. He made me to be kinda like his boy. I hunt, ride bikes, know a lot about cars and guy things. I'm still his little girl though. Your husband will be happy with having a girl. He just doesn't realize yet, girls can do all the things boys can!

The only 'real' reason I know men want boys is to carry on the family name. Of course, there are other reasons they may come up with... tougher to bring up a girl, etc.

Men feel that they need a boy to be manly. It will fade. THey think that they need someone to carry on a piece of themselves. Besides...you can always have another baby

Mainly because we all want what we understand ...we all want what we have lived ....it is the same as asking, why do Americans want their kids to be Americans, why do catholics want their kids to be catholics, why do heterosexuals want their sons to be heterosexuals ...because we all feel more comfortable about the known than about the unknown. So all guys feel more comfortable about playing ball and fighting with their boys than playing barbie with their girls. We humans are as simply stupid as that. The unknown just scares us and we revel in the comfort of what's known to us.
