More to the point than the other answers, it is dependant on if you're looking at 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g.
Each has a different general range based on the type. And yes, they do vary slightly by manufacturer. 802.11g is about the most common anymore, although I personally have an 802.11b.
As far as I know, the range is about 150 feet for 802.11g and 100 feet for the other two.

Varies by manufacturer and model. Although most say 100 feet. HOWEVER, that is based on an OPEN FIELD enviroment.
Such things as walls, floors, furniture, etc will limit the distance in actual use.
Also the physical placement of the Router effects range also. Best rule of thumb is the higher the better, like on top of your computer desk and not on the shelf of the desk. Also, don't place such things as speakers, Disk cabinets, etc close to the Router. Keep as open an area around the Router as possible for max range.
