it was founded by richard block & david quayle in 1969 in southampton hence BLOCK & QUAYLE AND ENDED UP AS B&Q regards john

orignally formed by 2 builders who had to travel far and wide for quality building materials they set up a small site in colchester for the purchase of materials for Builders of Quality , the successs of this merchants was so great they opened another three stores in the colchester area . After researching the main purchasers of there products in the late 50s the identified that the diy builders were frightened off by the name of there store so in 1960 they renamed there stores B&Q and there sucess rocketed upwards and onwards. The names of the owners were not the insperation behind the name though.
