After laying from 3 to 6 eggs, the nest is covered with soil and the eggs left to hatch on their own. When egg-laying time comes, the mother typically digs a hole, lays her hard-shelled eggs in it, then fills the hole with earth, and leaves. After an incubation period, which may be as short as 6 weeks or more than 7 months, the hatchlings must dig their way to the surface.

Box turtles lay eggs from, May throughout July sometimes they fail lay eggs in captivity but if they do means they are happy, females usually lays four to eight eggs, hatchling period is 2 to 3 months, if you kept a male and a female together the eggs should be fertile and if they are outdoors she will buried the eggs some were in the pond she's kept you can leave the eggs out and they should hatch but because they are not in wild and is not the same this could fail they can have more chance to hatch if the eggs are incubated to do this you need to handle the eggs be careful they are very fragile also because the embryo is easy to kill, reptile eggs unlike bird eggs should not be turned.

Did it mate with a male turtle? I had a female box turtle and it laid a clutch of eggs but they were still born. Reptiles can lay eggs without them being fertilized so I'm wondering if yours has mated with a male beforehand.

It normally lays on average 6 but it depends on the health of the turtle and the fertility of its mate.
