You don't need to know how to pray if you want to you just talk to God, like hes right there next to you. If you really want to get to know him just start the conversation, then wait and listen

What or who do you think is God? First define your God. To me God is the creator of all matter - the initiator who started everything in the first place - long before the big bang! My God is not a man in the sky it is more like an energy, which pervades every thing, every time. This energy is intelligent, sentient (has feeling) and can act - ie can change things.
God is not an external being. He is everything, everywhere, everytime. He is inside you. He is in the wind, the flowers, the rocks, the enemy you have, the person you dislike, your best friend. God operates through everything, everybody.
We have free will, so we are able to make choices. Always ask the highest part of you to make the right choice for you at that time, that is asking God.
Prayer is not just for asking, it is also for giving thanks. When you see something that delights you, think of its creator, it may be a small pot, thank the potter, go back a step, thank the company that made the wheel, thank the earth for providing the clay, thank the universe for proving the Earth...etc... take everything back to it's origin and you are left with God. God is no-thing, yet everything. You are praying to God with every word you utter.
You don't need a church or a shrine, but belonging to a church may help, you will meet people with faith and trust in the 'weaver' of our lives.
Listen to that small quiet voice inside you - you know what to do! You are praying.

God is beyond space and time, so it's no wonder that you feel emptiness in a church or shrine. Yet in the vastness, He is extremely close to you. The fact that you want to pray and are concerned about the emptiness tells me that you are actually very near God, but just don't know how to understand His presence.
Your desire to pray at all is you responding to God calling you to Him. Being able to pray doesn't depend on what feelings we have in a church or shrine. It depends only on your desire to pray and on your faith that He is there.
Sometimes the best times you can spend with your best friend is when you're just sitting alone together, not necessarily talking. The same thing is true with prayer. You don't have to use words to pray with God. He already knows your heart and He knows you more closely than you know yourself. Just be with God quietly.
Take a few moments to read scripture to remind yourself that you're in God's presence and that He is very near to you always, especially at that moment. Then just sit quietly with Him and knowing He's sitting with you. Use whatever words you want to if you feel moved to use words.
He's extremely happy when you're with Him, even if it feels empty to you in church.

Churches and Shrines are just buildings. They are empty. You already feel the need to pray. So god is already working in your life. You don't need to be in a shrine or a church, but finding other to fellowship and share with is important. Keep looking, find someone to talk to. And pray if you feel the need, don't worry where you are.
God bless.

Fear not...lot's of us are like that.
I use to be intimidated by all the pomp, circumstance and pagentry of the catholic service, the paintings, statues that were grotesque, the confessional, the catechism, the gregorian chant music, kneeling, sitting, standing, the gospel and their pius and absolute interpretation of it, the nuns we called the black brides (all kind of mean and bossy too), and the dominican nuns with the wing hats, the venial and MORTAL sins, et. al. Seems like we were damned before we entered. I tried other church denominations and they were much kinder to the psyche. However, they bored me after a while. My cathedral is to stand on top of a mountain and listen to the wind, the birds, whatever or just go outside and look around and see what a beautiful world it is...and know there is a creator. Organized religion will mess you up...you sound like you would be much happier being a free spirit. Enjoy it!
Meanwhile just relax...you've got all the answers...they are within you. Be still and know!

Forget the word "pray". Go inside of yourself, be still and it will come to you what you need to say. As for church, you are the church. That place that people label as Church is merely a building where believers choose to meet and worship that which they call "god". The One that dwells inside of you will direct you in the direction needed for understanding and growth. The urging to "pray" is that One calling for your attention. Answer the call.

There are a few different routes you can take:
1. Talk to a pastor/priest/spiritual leader about your problems whom you trust, or feel you can trust.
2. Talk to your friends and family about your faith crisis.
3. Look into other faiths that could possibly be more fulfilling to you.
4. Crack a science book and see if you're ready to become a heathen atheist, like moi. Well, I didn't become one...My parents are atheists and I was raised as one. But still, others 'convert' and you can too if it's RIGHT for you.
Just make sure what you do feels right to you. Don't do something that makes you feel uncomfortable. If religion generally makes you uncomfortable, maybe it's time to take a break. If it's just the church, find a different one. Read a few books on renewing faith. Just don't brainwash yourself, haha. These feelings are genuine and need to be addressed.

Sit down in your own home in a place where you feel comfortable and ask God to make himself real to you. (Do you have a Bible?) Ask Him to speak to you then begin reading the Gospel of John in your bible. Devote yourself to read 1 or 2 chapters of the bible each day, asking God to speak to you and lead you. He will lead you to a church where you don't feel empty. Another source you might try is: Through the Bible Radio, The ministry of J.Vernon McGee. You can find it on the world wide web at TTB.org. if you have an audio player, you can listen and he will teach you about the bible and god's ways.
Start that way. God Bless you. You are loved by God.

Praying is like talking to your earthly fhater, Just talk to God in your own way. Repeating what they teach in some churches in called: Chanting" God does not like chanting. Let's not be like the parrots that repeat what they hear. You can pray while driving, cooking; it does not matter the place where you pray, the important thing is you keep in touch with God.
May God Bless you

Not everyone needs a God. Bhuddists beleive that the transendence of mortality, or enlightenment, is possible of all humans. Atheists beleive that there is no God. Agnostics have not decided. Spiritualists beleive in the power of oneself and of everything. A person can have faith without religion. There is no need to pray, or go to a church, even if one has been raised that way. Sometimes all one needs is to beleive in a higher being, not necesarily a God, and simply thank them for the small things. As a Bhuddist/Agnostic, I find that simple belief that everything will work itself out works better than I've ever seen religion working.
Plus, simple belief, without religion or structure, leaves one open to experience anything, speak to anyone, be with anyone.

Get a Bible and read the 1st and 2nd chapters of the Book of Acts in the New Testament.. Read it a couple of times. And then ask God if you could receive that experience? Be patient, pray often, He'll be there for you!
While you wait read John 14 in the New Teatament.
