to ME...all of that would be included the job description of a person who does shipping. Are you saying if I did NOT pay handling fees, they wouild treat my package differently? I'm thinking if they did, they would be fired for not doing their job as expected!

If it is handled well, you'd probably be more than happy to offer the handling fee as a tip for a job well done. There is something to be said for being handled well.....
but
shouldn't that be an optional charge? What happens if you pay a shipping and handling fee and they do not handle it properly? Do they offer you a refund of the handling charges?
What if you request when you make your purchase that your item NOT be handled in order to save on the handling charge. You should try that and see what they say.... ;-)

My usual reaction to the terms "shipping and handling charges" is to say, "yeah, shipping and fondling charges", since I often believe, as some of your other responders have said, "It's just a cheesey way to get more money". But then some of your other responders have other answers that sound well founded, like paying for the shipping materials and maintaining the fleet of trucks, etc., and so, that sounds good too. I wouldn't have had a clue as to what the right answer was till I read some of the other answers, but most of them sounded good. I hope you got what you needed. God Bless you.

maybe the handling part is "commission" for the employees.
Handling usually means searching for it in the warehouse, maybe getting on a step ladder, maybe driving some kind of vehicle to get to where it is, and maybe also includes taking the order.
However sellers make money on eBay when they add the handling charges and they just put the items in the box. Maybe handling also includes driving to the post office or calling the FedEx guy

I think "handling" means the packing of your items into a box. The cost is always ridiculous, though. Makes you want to say, "Couldn't you just ship it to me without handling it first?"

i think the handling might actually count as the cost of the packaging that it comes in...otherwise, it's just another way they can get a couple bucks outta ya.

I think that handling refers to the packaging of whatever you are buying. Funny question....

It covers the cost of the packaging materials and boxes. They're not free, you know.

It's how they handle your package, like taking precaution and not dropping it, smashing it, etc.
