the battery fittings on the tractor are such that they indicate this is a positive ground set up....but i really would like to be sure before i hook it up. when i was attempting to charge it, it kept overloading the charger. I had the neg lead to the grounded post but that doesn't mean that couildn't have been the positive terminal. just sloppy work, i guess.

there is currently no battery in the tractor. were there a battery in the tractor, there would be no question which post was negative or positive. whatever connects to ground is not necessarily negative

In less the battery cable have been changed look for a red strip that would be plosive, you may need to follow farther up pass the first box or to the starter, most likely you will find some type of fuse that will fry first or at worst have to change out a few cables. if that does not work your odds are 50/50 flip a coin.

Good luck

If it is a positive system look at the ground and it will be connected to the frame someplace.
