I think it's to disassociate the movement from the idea of "spending freely". "Progressive" also suggests improvement, and "liberal" has become a dirty word in America in the last 20+ years. You don't hear anyone on Yahoo Answers complaining about all those bleeping progressives!

Frankly, I think it's silly. No single word can accurately sum up a person's beliefs about even a single topic, let alone all of them.

Because I am too afraid to take a stand and label myself something that in certain ways has taken on negative connotations and I think "progressive" sounds better than "liberal." It makes me sound smarter, very progressive you know.
