My boyfriend was checking his email and I happened to be sitting by him when he was reading it. He received an email from an adult (porn) site. There was only one address that it was sent to but it wasnt even his hotmail address. This isnt the first time that I have seen this on his email. This address is the same each time and it comes from more than one adult site. Can you help me figure this out?

what most do is enter email addresses at random using certain words or combination or words in an email address in order to get a hit. could be he was surfing some porn while you were gone but they tend to send out hordes of spam email regardless of whether you visit their site or not. DO NOT OPEN THEM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

what they do is one of two things;
A) like I said before, they will use various combinations of name, numbers etc in the email address in hopes it will reach someone who is not suspicious of it and open it anyways. for example, they'll do stuff like,

johndoe@yahoo.com
johndoe1@yahoo.com
jdoe@yahoo.com
johnd@yahoo.com

and so on. as you can see eventually they'll get a hit on an actual address even if the receiver does not open it. when you send an email to an undeliverable address you get an email back saying that the email could not be delivered bcuz the address didn't exist or whatever. the porn sites mass mailer program will keep trying addresses until it STOPS receiving this email from the server. It's like telemarketing on the net only in far greater capacity. once it gets a hit, or that undeliverable message deosn't come back, then the program they use will know that this email address is a good one and continue to send emails to that address

OR

B) what they can also do is send emails via your IP address or server address. they don;t necessarily need the exact address perse, but if they can get a hold of IP addresses, which are extremely easy to generate (see for yourself at http://www.whatismyip.com) and they can send emails directly through the server to your email address without having the exact email address which is why when your BF gets his emails and they are not addressed to him, he can still get them bcuz of either the server address or your IP. Either way there's no real way to stop it unless you report it as spam (which may stop it temporarily) or just delete ASAP. if you open it, it sends a tracker back to the originating software that notifys it that someone has this account AND that it is an active one. Meaning, if you don't like one email coming in every now and then, opening them will often sends dozens more your way. which is why you never open them. funny how the internet works sometimes. anyhoo, just delete ASAP, DO NOT OPEN and give the guy a break (assuming he actually did visit a site)

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

One more thing. many blockers or filters will delete emails containing certain words in the header or the subject line. so there will be cases when you get emails with just weird random words in the subject line like concentrate or wellbeing or some other weird words that bypass the filters and get through. you'll also get emails with subjects like this;

qwedowe12123
erovro3434
etc etc etc

filters can't stop these cuz they don't know what the hell these things are. so any weird ones just delete and you should be fine

Heck, I get addresses to porn sites e-mailed to me at WORK! I am female, straight, engaged, and you can sure bet I've never been on a porn site at work. They don't really have a spam blocker set up for my e-mail address at work because I handle some recruiting (work in HR) and a lot of resumes were getting filtered out. LOL, don't know why, maybe they had "Viagra" on them or something. Anyway, it's probably spam, and it happens to all of us. These jerks get your e-mail addresses any way they can, maybe he has posted something on Usenet or something? That is how I started to get a lot of spam on my home address until I changed to a server that would let me put a fake e-mail address in (like jan.n.o.s.p.am@hotmailspamfree.com)

These stupid sites also have automatic mailers that just try as many random combinations of addresses as they can until they get a hit.

And yeah, the other answerers are right also, he could have been looking at porn on line too. That is a whole other topic, and if you don't approve of that (if that is what he indeed did) then you will need to have a serious talk with him about both of your values and where you see your relationship going.

Speaking from experience though, it is pretty rare to find a straight young guy who doesn't like porn (unless he lives in Maine, LOL).

Maybe he's a straight male in the 21st century with access to the internet. Or maybe it's spam. I wouldn't worry about it. And if you're thinking what I think you're thinking... Even if he gets them becuase of where he may have been on the internet it's not personal. It's a little silly to feel threatened by pixels.

Either he signed up for it (give him a break he's a GUY, that's what we do). Or it might be spam. Just let it go.
