I want to keep just one tank. I have two tanks now, 40 gallons each.

The only major risk with Plecos is that they sometimes like to suck on the slime coat of the goldfish. (It's possible consistant feeding might prevent this behavior.) Also Pleco aren't cold water fish so you'd need to be sure the temp was around 75 which is a good range for goldfish and pleco. (Be sure not to subject the poor guy to rapid temp change.)

i have a 55 gallon tank with both kinds of fish in there. my fish store says you shouldnt, but they've been together for 1 1/2 years now, and all seems fine.

I have used these and other tank cleaning aquatics in many different setups and have never had a problem.

plecos are sometimes carniverous,especially when its dark
they will suck the slime off the sides of goldfish and sometimes
they suck out their eyes (I've seen it)
Goldfish don't need algae eaters or bottom cleaners in the aquarium with them
