Computer science stresses the more theoretical aspects of both computers and computation. Computer science may be a viable alternative for those who are interested in applying mathematics and science toward the solution of technical problems and who enjoy working with computers but do not desire to pursue a career in engineering. In many instances, the computer science program is part of the school (college) of engineering or the school of engineering and applied science. In this situation, the first year or two of the computer science program may have considerable commonality with the computer engineering program. After that, the two paths diverge, with the computer science program placing more emphasis on data structures involving additional mathematics, programming languages, and other software concepts.

As technology rapidly advances it may also be desirable for individuals seeking to work in the field of computer science to become certified in particular fields by meeting certification qualifications established by some software firms. Many employers consider such certifications a standard prerequisite for applying for positions within their organization. Individuals interested in seeking specialized software certification should discern which computer system programs they want to focus on and consult the manufacturers of the appropriate software.

Computer science teaches more in the way of software programming, networking, etc. Computer engineering is actually a subdiscipline of computer science and can be either software or hardware based. Software engineers design programs and hardware engineers design computer systems. A general Information Systems degree will get your foot in the door at many corporations in their IS departments. As an engineer you may be limited to working for software/hardware development firms, but you will make quite a bit more money once you've been in the field for a while.

Computer science is almost totally oriented toward software development while computer engineering is both hardware & software oriented. In computer engineering, a computer engineer must have a significant knowledge of software development in order to be able to design the machines w/c will run the software. also, is intended to those who want to apply the electrical engineering principles to the design of computers, networks of computers, or sometimes systems that include computers...
