It depends. First of all, although I enjoy competetive cheerleading and used to coach an all-star squad, I don't consider it a sport, because it is not governed by a set of rules. Instead it is governed by judges and their interpretations of the routine. I also don't consider diving, gymnastics, or figure skating sports because of that fact...the competitors are athletes, but that doesn't mean what they do is a sport.....but I digress.

Competetive cheerleading is a lot different from cheering for a school (although some schools are very competetive). The cheerleaders are definately athletes and put on an entertaining show that many people enjoy watching. Even if you claim to hate cheerleading, you can't deny that you've stopped for longer than a second to watch the championships on ESPN. You are ignorant if you can't admit that the cheerleaders featured are obviously dedicated and talented.

Not all cheerleading is like that though. I am sure that there are some schools where cheerleading is more of social club than anything. But, I am from Kentucky (went to Dunbar High School...featured on Cheerleader Nation, and the University of Kentucky....the most successful cheerleading squad in history), and I now live in Dallas, which has several of the best squads in the nation....so cheerleading means something different to me, because I've been exposed to the athletic, competetive side of the activity.

So the point of the activity? What's the point of anything really? Just because you think it is stupid, doesn't mean it has no merit.

ok cheerleading on the sidelines jumping up and down is not what i consider a sport.. but i am on two teams that compete and we compete at national level . i go to the gym 5 times a week 2.5 hours each time.. and we have competitions 1 to two times a month and have extra 6 hour practices all of the time.. trust me we aren't all s l u t s and trust we im not a cheerleader because of the outfit in fact the outfits even bother me.. competivtive cheerleading aka allstar cheerleading is def. a sport because we have a very strict set of rules for each level of cheerleading and we are judged on everything from a stunt wobbling to a stunt falling well i guess you didnt make it and you are unhappy but try a level 1 allstar team.. no skill required

Cheerleader have to make sure that the crowds chants stay appropriate. they also represent their school. For people who don't think it's a sport should try some of things like jumps and stunting that cheerleaders have to do to pump the crowd up. not all cheerleaders are there to get a boyfriend. Most just like the excitement that comes with stunting. The uniforms depend on the school. The uniforms at my school aren't revealing at all. Don't call anything stupid or judge it if you have never done it.

Don't judge a book by it's cover or the reputation it gets until you see the kind of things devoted people to the sport can do.

Omg!! What is it with you people and thinking cheerleading isn't a sport!! GOD! It is so annoying. Like I said before, people who complain about other sports NOT being sports are the ones who have no athletic ability. Do you seriously know what we have to do? We have to be flexible, strong in the arms/legs, and have a lot of energy. Girls like me have to THROW other girls in the air. We have to do backhandsprings, tucks, libertys, etc. You have no idea. So don't go around saying cheer isn't a sport. You don't know anything. People like you are just JEALOUS! God. And what else. OH YEAH! We have to ace 5 out of seven classes.

So you people who think cheer isn't a sport, please, stop posting these things 'cause it's stupid and it SHOWS that you are insecure. It does.

cheerleading is a sport and it takes alot of dedication and training. You must keep up your grades and have good moral values since you will be a role model for all. I happen too know because my daughter cheered for 5 yrs and it was hard work and alot of sprains and sore muscles. it's also very expensive so it's not to be taken lightly when one tries out! pls. don't judge a book by it's cover.

It's not even considered a sport at my school it's a club. The point is to show school spirit. Representitives of the school. Support for sport teams.

it is too pointless. it just aims to make you be proud of being ( A stupid cheerleader ) and you can get all the guys with you .. and to show 1/2 of your body naked and no body can tell you that is wrong . AND to play with that strange fluffy thing .. and ... to waste time ...

So Guys have something hot to watch. Now stop hating and being such a spoiled sport, I totally condone cheer leading and think the uniforms should be made even skimpier to make them more aerodynamic. Plus it isn't a sport anyway.
