do people ever buy farms but dont use it as a farm, like the only thing they do with it is just put a yard a build a really big house so they have alot of land?

Yes, they do! I work fpr the Dept of Ag and people sell farmground all the time to buyers to be subdivided or just to build a home and have a little acreage.
