okay, make sure the 3 gallon jug is empty, right. Now fill up the 5 gallon jug with whatever liquid you're measuring. take out 1 gallon and dump it in the 3 gallon and voila, you have 4 galons left.

I like BeC's answer and another possibility would be less accurate, but quicker and that is to estimate. If the 5 gallon jug is a uniform cylinder jar shape, then fill the 3 gal, put that in the 5 gal. jar and then make a mark where 1/2 the remaining space is. That will be very close to 4 gal. with some margin for error depending on where the 5 gal. mark on the jug is due to the the curve of the jug toward the lid.

Fill up the 3 gal., pour into the 5 gal. Repeat. You will have one gallon left in the 3 gal. jug, and the 5 gal jug will be full. Pour out the 5 gal jug. pour the one gallon from the 3gal jug into the 5 gallon jug, refill the 3gal. again, and pour into the 5 gal, and you will have your 4 gallons.

I fill the 5-gallon jug and pour 1 gallon in 3-gallon jug. Now the 5-gallon jug has 4 gallons in it. Or better yet, fill the 5-gallon jug up to the 4 gallon mark.

go buy a 4 gallon jug.
OK... you could do it by weight. take the jug and place it on a scale. fill it to the top with whatever you are measuring then divide the weight by 5 and you will have the weight of a single gallon. Then multiply the weight by 4 and you will have the weight for 4 gallons. Remove the substance until you reach that weight. Should work.... theoretically.

Fill up 5gal, empty it into 3 gal and pour out 3gal. Pour remaining 2gals in 5gal into the 3gal. Fill up 5gal and pour it into 3gal. you'll only be able to pour 1gal from 5 into 3 coz 3 already has 2 in it. you now have 4gals in the 5gal jug.
