Boric acid is the key, and it's cheap. Spread the powder along the dark corners and water pipes where roaches travel, they'll get it on their legs and take it back to thier nests and lick it off, and it will make them thirsty, but no matter how much they drink, they will never be satisfied. A professional will help too, but the boric acid is a good start. You can find it at hardware stores, garden supply and places like that.

If they are ON the walls then they are also IN the walls.
You will need to keep bombing the place weekly. Seal the doors and windows with duct tape.
Sprinkle boric acid along the floorboards and seal up every little crack and crevice with filler foam. Don't forget to seal around the pipes, behind the stove and in any gap you can find ... no matter how small.
Don't forget to treat around the house on the outside also. You would be amazed how many cockroaches climb up the outside of buildings.

clean and call a professional out get a contract and have them come out once a month, it takes months to eradicate those nasty little bugs and if you are going to rent out the property definitely keep the exterminator on a monthly basis.

Spread Borax around the base boards and anywhere close to whaere you have actually seen the roaches.
They eat it and also get it on their feet and take it back to the nests - it is very poisonous to them.

To kill "on-the-spot": rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Just spray whichever roaches you see and they will die within 10 to 30 seconds, guaranteed.
To kill "long-term": borax/boric acid.
