Not all stocks. But many stocks you can buy and sell by dealing directly with the company. The rules vary by company- some require you to buy one share from a broker and then from that point on you are fine. Others, you can buy directly but have to buy 5 or more shares (no big deal there).

Usually, the hitch is that this is for the investor not the day trader. You often can't buy and sell with the same frequency as using Charles Schwab. But I've done this and it is not difficult either- most companies now have online systems so there is no more mailing things back and forth as in the old days (5 years ago).

No, you could purchase stock directly from many companies but, to 'trade' them the only way would be to become a floor trader.

If you mean UK Government Stock, then the answer is yes. Ask at the post office for a form and pre paid envelope. The dealing charge is about ½% which is nice.

If you mean quoted shares, then your bank will trade for a cut.
