they're both regarded as masterpieces. Both Shakespeare and Bernstein were probably geniuses (very over used word). I'm not sure it's right to compare the two. West side story is probably the best musical ever written. Knocks Andrew Lloyd Webber in to a cocked hat.

Romeo & Juliet anytime - It's more dramatic and I like watching Shakespeare, and I'm not too keen of the Music in West Side Story

id rather watch West Side Story..
the original of romeo and juliet is kinda boring...and the remake is just kinda retarded..
but west side story has music and is a better story over all! i think it's more real, something relatable and realistic i guess. and i love that movie. such a good movie!

West Side Story (Love musicals and this story is more believable)
Maria & Tony were so in love!!
The dark theme, sophisticated music, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in English language musical theater, which had previously (with rare exceptions) tended toward light and fluffy themes.
Bernstein's score for the musical has been extremely popular. Some of the songs Include:
"Something'sComing", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "Gee, Officer Krupke", "I Feel Pretty", "One Hand, One Heart", and "Cool".
