it is, indeed, a pretty thought, but it is a conceit. To begin with on face value it is untrue. Kings who make music, also make wars. Another answerer pointed out Henry VIII; also there is Frederick the great of Prussia, probably the most "musical" of monarchs. He played the flute, wrote over 100 sonatas for the instrument, and in return, Bach wrote for the King his "Musical Offering." None-the-less, Frederick plunged all of Europe into the 7-years war. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_the_Great
But aside from its face value is the subtext of your sentence - that those people who undertake a study of the arts are different than other human beings - more sensitive, less violent - and this just is not true. Mao Tse Tung was a excellent poet , but that did not stop him from sending thousands of people to torture and death in the Cultural Revolution. Martin Heidegger, while writing some of the most influential (and beautiful) books of philosophy was also informing on his colleagues and students as Nazi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Heidegger
So good writing does not make a good person. I would rather have leaders who are truly compassionate, even if they cannot write a good sentence. But that type of leader only comes from people like you - those people who are constantly looking for a better and more peaceful way. Thanks for the interesting question.

Sorry but not true. Look at the Bible. King David was known for his music but went to war several times. The French Kings usually were very well rounded and also made war. The fact is as a leader of a nation you have to be willing to go to war to protect your nation and your people. You have to decide when it is right or wrong to go to war. Look at how many operas are about battles and how many books are about war.
It might make them more artistic in nature but as a leader they still have to make decision on war.

I suppose Hitlers Mien Kamp & Moa little Red Book don't count though. Also what about Machiaveli etc. I suppose I am saying it depends upon the person, even Marx & Engles philosphies were taken to extremes with comunism and ended up with uncle Joe killing millions.
I would also add NERO to that list. Think about that.

Hmmn. What about Henry VIII? Very keen on composing (Green Sleeves?) Also keen on bashing the French, splitting from Rome, and matrimony.
