Hi - my husband is European and insists on doing ALL repair work around the house as needed. Unfortunately he also complains about being tired and is taking longer to start and complete a job now he is getting older (66). Also, he will not cut down on his part time job which also leaves him tired at the end of the day.

working and therefore keeping your body and mind fit are excellent things to do as long as you can do them- but there is a line! Overworking has the opposite effect- tires you out, leaves you drained as your body struggles to keep up to the pace that is being set. Over working aging persons are so much more likely to suffer major injury ( maybe a heart attack, or a slip from heights or on unsteady ground). Please try to persuade him that while it's good to be a handy man, he should not be stressing his body so much. Tell him you'd love to spend your golden years together- isn't retirement every persons dream? enjoy the remaining time that you have- who knows how long that is? Maybe some sort of full out discussion or confrontation is needed here!

You cant until he cant do it anymore. Some men dont want to bring another man to do a job they feel they should be able to do. He probably also doesn't want to admit that he is getting older. He'll get more tired soon and hopefully change his mind.
