Would you say Nathaniel Hawthorne was a profound Christian writer, and why?

He took on Christian Hypocrisy in "The Scarlet Letter."

Hawthorne did not approve of Hester receiving the more severe punishment (the Scarlet A) because she refused to identify her lover (who turned out to be a priest).

i have had the privilege of reading a few hawthorne short stories and i would not consider him so much a christian writer as i would a writer that simply interweaves religious themes into his works. the main story that stands out would be Young Goodman Brown which was loaded with religious symbolism.
