A great athlete can play more than one sport. Jackie Robinson made all-conference at UCLA in football, baseball, basketball and track.

I have to go with Jim Thorpe. He won several Olympic medals, played professional baseball and college and pro football making it to the Hall Of Fame in football. I would say my second choice would be Bo Jackson who could run like a rabbitt and was a big man being a pro baseball and football star. Michael Jordan and Deion Sanders were also great athletes. Also without a doubt, Babe Didrickson Zaharias was the greatest female athlete of all time so she could not be left out. She won Olympic track medals and was also good at throwing the javelin, playing baseball and was a great golfer!

1. deion sanders- played baseball and football. pretty good at both.
2. best captain in the nhl- steve yzerman- he lead detroit for over 20 years. he carried the team with few words and lead by example. there will never be another player like him in detroit.
3. lance armstrong- he rode his bike and won 7 tour de france titles despite having testicular cancer. he's a person that people look up to becuz he stuck to riding despite the fact he was sick.
4. wayne gretzky- broke the record for goals and points that gordie howe set back in the day
5. gordie howe- the most talented detroit red wing to ever play hockey
all of those guys are great athletes in my mind
there are more but it'll take too long to write.

Very hard, but I have an answer.

Walter Payton. He only missed one game in his entire career (and wanted to play that game his rookie season, the trainers didn't know what they had). He played on many horrible teams, with poor players and the opposing defenses keyed on him.
Walter was a solid and electric runner and his power was legendary. Walter also laid down wicked blocks, caught passes, threw an occasional pass and never ever complained or showboated after he made a touchdown. Walter gets my vote.

Its gotta be Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders. Anyone who can play two professional sports has to be the best in the world.
