Not always, but a lot times they are. Cheap things are often made cheaply and fall apart. That's not to say that the most expensive thing is the best, either. Sometimes it's just the name a person ends up paying for.

If it's shoes, than you should get the more expensive ones so that you don't ruin your feet. You need to go shopping at various stores and comparison shop. That can save you a lot of money.

It depends on what you are buying. A lot of times things are more expensive due to the quality and craftsmanship. I have found that an expensive pair of jeans fit a lot better than a cheap pair (last longer too).
