becasuse they are nocturnal. however when we were at the Hoover Dam in the tunnel underground, i distinctly hear crickets as there were a lot of dark niches; and it was daytime.
guess they got confused.

that's when they come out to mate, which is why they're making that noise (it's a mating call)
