I Googled it, twice, and the first result I got the first time was 40 to 48 km, aka 25 to 30 mph. (It wasn't the first result the second time, but still said the same) I also read a little further down the list, that the American Quarter horse can run short distances up to 50 mph, and Thoroughbreds can run the same distances at about 40 to 45 mph.

Racehorses can gallop up to 40 mph. Sometimes faster.

Some horses (mainly Saddlebreds) can do a rack up to 20 mph.
We clocked my Spotted Saddle Horse gelding's fastest gait at 16 mph.

They can definately go faster than 25mph!

Pretty dang fast if it is being chased by a big boned woman wanting to ride it. *lol*

Seriously, I would say pretty fast. Back in the wild west robbers would ride them until they were side by side with trains and then jump off the horse onto the train. That's pretty fast, maybe like 30mph.

I think it depends what horse you're riding. Some sick ones might be slower and some with a lot of energy might go faster. And, horses that were made for games, like racing, might go the fastest.

The fastest horse was clocked at over 43 MPH but it also depends on the horse.
