I hope the OricaleAtDelphi was joking. Anyway,
The American Civil Liberties Union has sometimes done much to preserve our first amendment rights. However they do seem to be too much obsessed with smoking out anti semitism (which I don't believe is a real word; or even a real event in much of what they go on about.) The ACLU needs to give more equal time to all American issues. For example, they should have spoken up when some people were upset in Illinois that a member of the Nation of Islam was being appointed to a governor's commission on racial affairs. She was being bashed for belonging to Minister Louis Farakaan's mosque. The group found her guilty by association for his outspoken comments over the years about what he see as Jewish participation in the disenfranchisement of blacks. (Hey, was that group the ACLU?)
At any rate, in a nation where we are supposed to be able to practice religious freedom and freedom of speech, organizations like the ACLU could really benefit us all--if they weren't so obviously biased!
I get a little sick of the rhetoric.

The ACLU fights for your right to ask this question. The Bush administration only wants you to voice your opinion if you agree with them.
Very often when people demonize the ACLU, they only focus on a specific type of person or issue that benefits from the ACLU's help. In your case, you seem to be upset about protecting the rights of criminals. I can understand why you'd feel that way. Child molestation is awful. But what about people that are ACCUSED of molesting a child, but are actually innocent? Thank God for the ACLU, or people like that would never get a fair trial.
The purpose of the ACLU is to protect freedoms, not limit them. That includes your right to practice whatever religion you choose. If you want to put up a cross in your window or have your children pray in school, you're free to do that. Those are the rights the ACLU fights for you to keep. What they fight against is someone trying to FORCE you to do those things.
I encourage you to visit the ACLU's website and read more about the kind of work they do. You may not agree with every cause they've undertaken, but hopefully you'll see that there's more to preserving civil liberties and individual freedoms than fighting on the side of criminals and trying to prevent the government from establishing a state religion.

I never understand the inanity of such thinking. Of course we shouldn't. And yes, I'm not a liberal. Registered Republican for 20 years. My point is that this society is based on oppositional dialogue designed to force compromise and cooperation to find solutions for problems that serve the greatest good for the largest number of people.
By having opposite extremes arguing (or on a good day, dialoguing) about a problem, the oppositional pressure combined with the need to find a solution creates answers that most people can live with, except those on the very extreme fringes.
You've got to have opposing viewpoints, and you have to take the time to listen to and understand other viewpoints to make sure you've really considered an issue in full. That's what the ACLU and the like are all about. I disagree with the ACLU frequently, most of the time, in fact, but I understand what they're doing, and it forces me to make sure I've really considered the issue before casting judgment.
I'm starting to repeat myself, so I'll stop now. :)

Are you daft? The purpose of the ACLU is to defend the Bill of Rights. Why would you not want to defend the Bill of Rights. U.S. Citizenship 101 is not easy. It means that you have to be willing to protect someone's right to stand up and say something that you would fight until the day you die. You're sounding more like the third Reich. I'm not a child molestor but I am a person who understands our government and the history of this nation; which evidently you do not.

Personally I don't like the ACLU because in their collective mind, nothing is ever wrong. With that said, I think it's important in a democracy to allow free speech so WE (not the government) can decided what's stupid or not.
Your question reminded me of a funny Onion headline, "ACLU defends KKK's right to blow up ACLU headquarters".

Yes it should be disbanded! The ACLU "used" to be a beneficial entity. But in the last few years it has been one of the leading contributors to the degradation and demoralization of this country!! Get rid of it!

The ACLU is a bunch of anarchists. They try to topple the govt. by taking the constitution and stretching it to ridiculous extremes. However they do have their uses. They have a web site for complaints. Sometimes politics makes strange bedfellows.

it truly is a private corporation supposedly meant to guard the rights of electorate besides the undeniable fact that they have a tendency to get over excited and change into very over zealous of their efforts to finish their meant agenda. no longer in straightforward words do they push the envelope, they get fairly radical and intensely riddiculous in what they do. my own own recommendations about the corporation is that we may all be a lot more effective acceptable off in the adventure that they under no circumstances existed. i do not deny that the reason and purpose is nicely meant besides the undeniable fact that i imagine the persons on the properly of the corporation could be a set of lunatics that get their kicks with the help of seeing merely how a lot havoc they could fireplace up with the help of attempting to adhere their nostril into all and distinctive else's company. many situations they stand contained in the way of justice.
