vw carb 34 pict3 1970 bahabugb i rebuilt the carb does not work?

Question

carb is gettin gas, i pulled jets and stuff back out cleaned them again..everything looks right...acts like it wants to run but just wont...smokes while its running..nothing i do with the air fuel mixture screws help at all..motor ran fine before.. ive doubble checked everything,,can yall plzzz gimmie some ideasss.. also how to i check for spark? and how do i know if i have compression..thanks for ur time....

If this is black smoke, it's running rich, too much gas. This can be caused by a bad float, out of adjustment float, or stuck float. A worn, dirty, or stuck open needle and seat can also cause this. If the smoke is blue, it's burning oil and may be fouling sparkplugs so they can't fire. A compression tester will tell you what your compression is. Take the coil wire out of your distributer cap. Have someone crank the engine while you hold the wire about one inch from clean metal on the engine. There should be a bright blue spark that goes from the wire to the metal. If there is no spark or a red colored weak spark, there is an ignition problem.
