Yzerman and heres why. In the beginning of his career he was a very lethal offensive weapon. He was overlooked by many because he was competing against two of the greatest offensive players in Mario lemieux and Wayne Gretzky. Yzerman wanted to win a cup though so Scotty Bowman got him to change his game and he turned into one of the greatest two way players in the game. Just watch clips of Yzerman in the playoffs playing defense and blocking shots. On top of that the man has more heart then anyone in the game. Just watch the clips from the playoffs when the wings won the cup against carolina. Yzermans knee was so badly hurt he was actually using his stick to lift him up off the ice. To top off the rest of it he was captain of his team from 1986-2006, longer than any other captain in the history in the NHL. Lets not forget that he took a paycut to bring in other great players to help the team win games. This is why Yzerman is the greatest all around player in the history of the NHL.

Gretzky is A number 1. He owns almost every record in the game. Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe also come into the category of best of all time. Yzerman was a great player and a great leader, but definitely should not be mentioned as best all around of all time. I could think of 10 others that fit the description more than he does. LaFluer, Lemieux Esposito to name a few.

My opinion - there are five players who were in a league of their own:

Maurice Richard
Gordie Howe
Bobby Orr
Wayne Gretzky
Mario Lemieux

Among these five, Bobby Orr is the greatest all-around hockey player of all time. Led the league in scoring - AS A DEFENSEMAN - and did it twice. Nobody did it before or since. Set the record for plus/minus - +129 in one season. Not even Gretzky ever got even reasonably close to that.

Mario Lemieux. Better overall average points per game then Gretzky. If he hadn't contracted Hodgkin's and his recurring back problems, Gretzky's records wouldn't be there. I love Greats, but Mario is the guy I pick first every time to lead my team. Only man to score 5 different ways in a game (even-strength, power-play, shorthanded, penalty shot, and empty-net). Just look at Gretzky's team around him too, Kurri, Messier, Coffey, and the list goes on and on. Mario won cups, with a bunch of blue collar, grind it out players, except Jagr of course. Gotta go with Mario.

P.S. goalies? Terry Sawchuck. Look him up, you'll see why, can you say shut out?

Gretzky and Orr revolutionized the game. Yzerman and Ron Francis were tremendous all around players.

The best all around player of all time is Sidney Crosby for sure! He is the #1 player in the NHL and he rocks! He is definitely going to be the next Wayne Gretzky. without a doubt! Hope it helps!

I would say Messier, Lemieux, and Yzerman are the top all-around players of all time. Definitely NOT Ovechkin or Gretzky.

Bobby Orr--offensively not only the best offensive defenseman in history but as good as a forward, blocked shots, killed penalties by basically controlling the puck, fought, hit and played 100% all out all the time and made it look easy on two bad knees.
