They say nowadays 8 hours. I think it used to be 6 hours minimum. Do you ever see those prescription sleep medicaton advertisements on TV?? They always say to allow yourself at least 8 hours of sleep a night to be fully rested. That may just be for the drug to completely wear off before you get up and drive or operate machinery, but if that was so they could have put only a certain milligram dosage in the pill to allow you sleep 6 or 7 hours. I like to get 10 hours of sleep a night, 8 hours absolute minimum, and more than 10 and I feel like a zombie all day and never get anything done.

Well, it strongly depends upon your age. Up until a person is nineteen, they still have the sleep cycle of a three year old, meaning the optimum number of hours of sleep should be 10-13. However, the average teenager requires at least 9 and 1/2 to fully function. The average adult over 30 needs about 6 to 8 to fully function.
Have fun.

More for babies and less for older people but around 6 to 8 hours of CONTINIOUS sleep.

interrupted sleep is no good and sleeping on a regular pattern is very preferable. If you notice, flying three time zones away (say NY to LA) you will wake up 3 hours earlier than you normally do. Thats because of circadian rhythm tells your body to wake up at this hour. The same goes with sleeping. If your body is used to sleeping at midnight, you will feel really tired even if you stay up the 2 hours extra.

I believe the body can function 100% on 4 hrs sleep per day. When in Iraq i was working 18 to 20 hour days for approx 5 months. Yes i felt tired but i soon got used to it. It all depends on what you are doing, i wouldn't like to function on 4 hrs if i was driving.

Studies show that people who sleep 6-7 hours a night, rather than 8 hours live longer. See my source.

Depends on your age, health state, tiredness level before retiring, whether you have to get up in the night perhaps for some body function or other disturbance, how drunk or overfed you are at bedtime and how long since last sleep. You'll know when you've had enough when you've been awake for about 5 minutes or so and want to stay awake.
