A firewall is a software that keeps other users away from your computer till you would not want them to. In layman's language it is a tool on internet and on local networks which prevents unauthorized access to your computers from other users/hackers.

NO it does not. It does filter what protocols are allow in and out. This can limit some types of viri and will help with various attacks.

It is mainly used for control of what can get into your network. Most viri come in via emails. A firewall is more like a bouncer for a popular night club. He only lets in those people on the approved list. A firewall will only let in the protocols on the approved list. However, unlike the bouncer, the firewall can also be set to only allow certain protocols out.

A firewall attempts to permit and deny specific communication in and out of your computer through whatever port is connected to the internet.

It watches programs inside your computer

It watches websites from outside your computer.

If you configure it correctly, it can be a good thing,

If you configure it wrong.... life as you know it will suck

A firewall if so configured blocks all incoming and outgoing transmitions of any kind from your computer, and will only allow such fuctions if you click allow if it trys to block it!

Therefore blocking all spyware and possible viruses.

But that is only if it is properly configured.

No, but what it does do it check packets of data comming into your entwork for validity issues, to prevent attacks like buffer overflows, etc. It can either be hardware or software based, and you can employ features such as port forwarding to block certain ports of communicaiton or applications too :)
