You should NEVER pay an agent upfront to represent you. They get paid when you get a job...they take 10% of your check. You should get away if an agent approaches you wanting money.
There are many agents out there are reputable. http://www.agentassociation.com/

please do not PAY to be part of an agency. A legit agency ONLY make money AFTER you do. For actors they get ten % of the gross. For a model I believe it's 20 %. They ONLY get it after you have booked the job and get paid. Go to SAG. org and see the list of agencies. They are legit. You just have to make sure you have good head shots (should not cost more then 200 or so) then.
A good way to start is by getting a commercial agent. I went to heyisawyourcommercial.com. I took a few classes with them. The guy, Mike Pointer knows everything about the biz. Just don't let him talk you into taking EVERY type of class he offers. But the commercal classes are great and they have a show case at the end. Legit commercial agents come and if they like you they sign you (free) That's how I got my first agent. Do fall for the traps. Read as much as you can about the biz. because that's exactly what it is--a biz.
Good luck.

Any agency that asks you to pay them is an agency to be avoided at all costs.
The minute an "Agent" or an "Agency" asks you for money, or tells you that you need to have photographs made with "Their Photographer" get up and walk out of the room. These people are only there to take your money... The best thing to do is to use as much foul language as possible as you leave... Call them Mother Effing Criminals... Call them Filthy Effing *******... Shout those words at them... Shout so loud you can be heard in the lobby by all the other unsuspecting victims of these scoundrels.
NEVER pay an agent or an agency up front. NEVER.
An agent gets paid by getting you work... he (or she) sends you out on an audition... he (or she) negotiates a fair wage when a producer decides they want to work with you... he or she gets a percentage of what you earn, AFTER you have been paid.
NEVER pay an agent or an agency up front to represent you. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER

I got picked up off the street by calvin Klien himself in NYC back in the mid to late 80's... Did a playgirl spread and a bunch of runway crap.. I stayed pretty much independent, but only because of my exposure in Calvin.. Any agency work I did was at Least 10% theirs, some even charge for travel.. It's a tough business...Good Luck..

You should not have to pay an agency for them to represent you. Beware of those that try to get you to pay. They will make their money from jobs you get. Depending on where you are located, you may have to go out of state to find a reputable one. There are many agencies out there that do not charge to represent you.
