You can't get it for free legally. Get openOffice.org though. It is free, open source, and as good as Word. You can save your documents in a form readable by people using Word too. It also comes with the rest of the office suite including presentation software and spread sheet programs.

You cannot legally download Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office - you must pay for this.
Evenm if you download it illegally Microsoft are finding ways of combatting this illegal use.
There is a very good free Microsoft Office equivalent that you can download from http://www.openoffice.org

You have to buy it. You can get viewer for word documents free - you can't create or edit them. Go to www.microsoft.com and search for word viewer. You can get a cheap version from PC world etc called MS Works, probably about £30. MS Word will be about £80 on it's own and about £160 for the office suite.

XP o.s. has notepad and wordpad. I'm another person that uses Open Offive rather than pay for an expensive office suite.
Beware fake downloads, they are the easiest way to install keystroke loggers, rootkits and trojans straight on to your p.c.
