I'm not of Indian ancestory or anything, I'm just a regular caucasian American, but I'd like to move to India or Pakistan in a couple of years when I get done with college. I'm going to school to be a teacher, and I've heard there is a lot of opportunity for Americans to get jobs in India or Pakistan. I love the Indian and Pakistani people, and wouldn't mind living in impoverished conditions (I basically already live in those conditions here in Utah). Are there any agencies in the U.S. or India that would help somebody like myself wanting to make a move like this? Thanks for your answer!

There are Teaching/ Volunteer programs available. The best way would be to contact them by email to get more info. on their jobs or projects. I don't think you will find any in Pakistan as they don't have affiliations with most Teach Abroad programs.

I am an American living in New Delhi, India. I don't care how poor your "impoverished conditions" are in the US, you will still be shocked when you arrive in India.

That said, it is best to come to India on a work visa. Look for a reputable private school in which to teach, as the goverment schools leave much to be desired.

You could also consider working in a BPO as an English language trainer and have higher earning potential.

The employer would need to help you with the work visa, otherwise you are able to enter for 6 months on a tourist visa.

I must say you have a very noble objective in mind...and I only hope that you know what you are doing and have thought it thru fully. "Impoverished" is a relative term and I suggest you come to India (I'm from India and hence answering only for India) and see for yourself first-hand what the conditions are like here in the schools before volunteering.

You could teach in a private school and for this you will have to go thru an exchange program. Contact the local Rotary Club in your locality or search the web. You will also require a work permit and have to go thru all the formalities for this.

So I suggest you better do your homework and here's wishing you all the best in your endeavors.

hi i lived in pakistan for 8 months, i am an australian of indian heritage and went over with my husband to visit with his family. i knew that it would be a shock to my system, but when i got there, nothing could prepare me for the shock i got. i was privileged enough to travel all around the country and it is amazing. words cant even begin to express the beauty of the country. once you look beyond the poverty you will see a amazing country and the people are so welcoming and loving. good luck in your endeavours and i hope that you get to go and do all that you want to do. you will enjoy it there.

If i may suggest try Thailand, i say your presence is more needed in northern part of Thailand, as you can see many hill tribes in that area and they needed a person who can teach them basic english but Alas only few offered their service to these people.Try to open this site www.ajarn.com
