They're intellectuals, not martyrs. If they spoke out, they'd end up in a body box.

While denoucing is the right thing to do. Denouncing or not does not solve the problem. The force approach the neocons have taken backfired and only helped increase antiwest and anti-American sentiments in the Muslim and Arab worlds.
If America were to withdraw from Iraq, I bet there would be a significant decrease in Anti-American sentiments.
I will quote the following:
"More important, saying that Israel and the US are united by a shared terrorist threat has the causal relationship backwards: the US has a terrorism problem in good part because it is so closely allied with Israel, not the other way around. Support for Israel is not the only source of anti-American terrorism, but it is an important one, and it makes winning the war on terror more difficult. There is no question that many al-Qaida leaders, including Osama bin Laden, are motivated by Israel’s presence in Jerusalem and the plight of the Palestinians. Unconditional support for Israel makes it easier for extremists to rally popular support and to attract recruits."
" ‘Terrorism’ is not a single adversary, but a tactic employed by a wide array of political groups. The terrorist organizations that threaten Israel do not threaten the United States, except when it intervenes against them (as in Lebanon in 1982). Moreover, Palestinian terrorism is not random violence directed against Israel or ‘the West’; it is largely a response to Israel’s prolonged campaign to colonize the West Bank and Gaza Strip."

the so called intellectuals and abed philosophers mince no words in condemning Americana's policies but at the same time they maintain stoic silence when the issues related to the global terrorism.now no Bertrand Russel, jean Paul Sartre exist who fearlessly voiced against the brutal policies of any group. i don't know why Noam Chomsky is silent.the reasons for not raising their voices is obvious they would be annihilated by those fanatic groups. on this platform i earnestly appeal to all those terrorists to shun the path of violence and not to resort to use innocent civilians as their target to further the promotion of their cause. i also request them to learn a lesson from the people of Nepal who peacefully transited from monarchy to democracy and the Maoists also shunned the path of violence and mingled with demo crates.but at the same time i denounce the global imperialism and strengthen the hands of united nations to solve any political problems.terrorists have no religion their religion is killing kids, women and old people even if they belong to their religion.

probably because, being intellectuals, they know about the history of such things like hezbollah. why they were created in 1982....to fight against the israeli occupation. yes, israel was an occupying force.
they also know that there is more than meets the eye with the big 'terror attacks' such as 9/11 and the 7/7 bombings.
Funny how everyone is open to reading into things and learning but Americans are not. It isn't Islamic...it is more Arabic. The gov't WANTS you to believe this was always a religious war.

Because for one, there is a conflict between the meaning of terrorist as defined by Bush... '...evil doers that hate freedom...' No intellectual person would believe that because most intellectuals have studied at least some depth of history; thereby, they know that is a bogus statement.
Secondly, if Islamic terrorism is denounced based on what you described then the USA would have to be denounced for its war against Islamic nations... as was stated yesterday by Bush himself,'... we are at war with Islamic Fascist..' This basically means that the USA considers this a war based on their Christian values and ignores all aspects of what we might have done to participate in their hatred for us.
So you see the dilemma.
Also consider this: only 30% of Americans support Bush. Why would a person of any intellect ignore what 70% of Americans see... that Bush is not conducting his war on terror properly.

Have you ever meet a "intellectual" that really had any common since.. If you were to put their brain on the edge of a razor. It would look like a bb rolling down a 4 lane highway.

Many of the worlds foremost intellectuals are introverts. They do not grandstand their egos, feelings, or opinions. They wish to lead unruffled lives that will leave them a serene feeling of tranquillity that will enable them to work at their highest level in their fields, rather than be distracted by feelings of anger, revenge, or alienation.

before everything, there´s no excuse to homicide harmless civilians. yet intellectuals might have a much broader perspective, possibly they dont see it as terrorism or think of that some terrorism needs to ensue to alter the prestige quo...

It's goes against the Koran to insult another Muslim. So by that logic the rest of us can go on fearful of our lives whenever a Muslim is in our general vicinity.
Life and religion get more ridiculous at every passing second.

We need to denounce global imperialism and terrorism in one voice and not be partisan to either... because both aim to destroy the decent spaces in the world as we know it. They both want to paralyze democracy and and autonomy of people and they both help each other to spread.
